Explore the long fight for women’s right to vote with Votes for Women, a flexible mini program that introduces kids to the women’s suffrage movement, the 19th Amendment, and some of the women who helped shape voting-rights history.

Through approachable history, creative activities, and opportunities to explore the women who have made a difference in their own communities, kids can learn about the persistence, courage, and determination behind this important chapter of American history.

Although this program is a natural fit for Women’s History Month, Women’s Equality Day, or lessons surrounding the 19th Amendment, it was intentionally designed to be used any time of year.

📜 Discover the Road to the Vote

Introduce kids to major moments in the women’s suffrage movement, from the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention through the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920.

The program also introduces several women who helped lead the way and provides important context that the story of voting rights did not end in 1920.

🎗️ Make an Empowerment Sash

Explore how suffragists used colors and symbols to make their cause recognizable, then let kids create a sash of their own using words, affirmations, colors, and decorations that are meaningful to them.

🎨 Create a Strong Woman Poster

What does a strong woman look like?

Kids create a bold poster celebrating the strength of women and girls. They can feature someone they know, someone from history, or a woman they imagine, then pair their artwork with a short, powerful message.

🔎 Take It Further

Extend the experience beyond the meeting with ideas for visiting museums and libraries, exploring local history, attending community or living-history events, and discovering women who made a difference close to home.

The optional Discover a Woman in Your Community extension encourages kids to interview a woman they admire, learn about her experiences and accomplishments, and bring her story back to share with the group.
